How to test your microphone online
- Select Start mic test and allow access when your browser asks.
- Choose the microphone you want to use. Speak at your usual distance and watch the level respond.
- Record a short sample, stop, and press play to hear your voice. Use headphones for a clearer listen.
Check mic volume and background noise
A moving meter confirms that this page receives sound from the selected microphone. Speak normally, then pause to compare your voice with the room noise. If the level stays close to zero dBFS, lower the microphone gain and test again. If it barely moves, check the input volume, mute switch and distance.
For a detailed recording check, leave two seconds of room sound before speaking. Analyze the sample and select that quiet section to measure its background level. Compare another recording after changing your setup.
Why is my microphone not working?
Check that the microphone is connected and unmuted, and choose the correct input above. If permission was denied, allow microphone access in your browser’s site settings and start again. If another app is using the device, close its microphone session and retry.
Questions about the mic test
Can I hear myself during the test?
Record a sample, then use playback to hear it. The microphone stops when the recording ends, so your speakers do not feed back into an open mic.
Is my microphone recording uploaded?
The live meter, recording and playback run on your device. A sample is uploaded only when you choose to analyze it and start the detailed analysis. You can delete the local recording at any time.
Can I test a headset or USB microphone?
Yes. Start the test, then choose an available microphone in the list. The list depends on the inputs your browser and device make available.
What does the microphone level mean?
The meter shows digital input level relative to the maximum, in dBFS. It helps you check whether sound is arriving and compare quiet and loud moments. It does not measure the room’s sound-pressure level. Listen to the sample to judge how your voice sounds.
