How to find the key of a song
- Choose a passage with a clear melody, bass line or chords. A percussion-only intro gives little evidence of key.
- Upload the audio and select Find song key. Read the estimated key and Camelot code together.
- Compare the result with your next track’s key. Open the wheel to explore neighboring and relative keys.
- Preview the actual transition. Check the bass and vocals for clashes, especially after changing playback speed.
Musical key, scale and Camelot code
The tonic is the note that feels like home. Major or minor describes the tonal family. A minor and C major share the same notes, but their tonal centers are different; the melody and chord resolution help distinguish them.
Camelot expresses those keys as a number and a letter. A represents minor and B represents major. Try the same code, the neighboring number with the same letter, or the same number with the other letter. These are starting points for harmonic mixing, not a guarantee that every arrangement will blend.
Why an automatic key estimate can differ
A song can change key, use borrowed chords or leave its tonal center ambiguous. Short clips, detuned recordings and vocals without accompaniment can also be difficult to classify. The result describes one overall estimate for the passage you provide.
If the answer sounds wrong, compare a harmonically stable verse or chorus and check the final chord with an instrument. Two tools can disagree on relative major and minor. Listen for where the phrase resolves instead of choosing whichever label looks more certain.
