01 — The tool
Crossfade two audio files with a controlled overlap
The free Loudness.ai Audio Crossfade tool blends the end of the first recording into the beginning of the second. During the overlap, one recording fades down while the other fades up. Set their order, the overlap duration and a linear or smooth fade curve, then listen to the handover.
Choose an overlap from zero to ten seconds, no longer than either recording. Overlapping time is shared: two 30-second clips with a two-second crossfade make a 58-second result. For a longer sequence of several recordings, use the Audio Joiner, which provides a separate place for each clip.

02 — How it works

Choose the two recordings
Add the first and second files in the order they should play. Check their names and durations. Swap the order if the transition should run the other way.
Set the overlap and curve
Choose how many seconds the recordings share. Start with a short overlap and select a fade curve. Increase the overlap only when the two passages sound suitable together.
Preview the transition and export
Prepare the transition and listen to the change between tracks. Check for overlapping words, competing vocals or a level drop, then choose MP3 or WAV and export the result.
03 — Practical uses
Blend song endings, ambience and recording takes
Music transitions
Crossfade song excerpts when a gradual handover fits the music. Avoid placing two strong vocal lines on top of each other. Trim the clips with the Audio Cutter if different boundaries make a better transition.
Ambience and background sound
Blend the end of one room tone or ambient recording into another. Listen for a sudden change in character or loudness. A longer fade can help when both recordings contain sustained sound.
Joining separate takes
Use a short overlap where compatible sounds should connect. For speech, choose a boundary between words and check the whole phrase. Use a direct join instead when both recordings must remain fully separate.
04 — Frequently asked questions
Audio Crossfade questions
Why is a crossfaded file shorter?
The overlap plays both recordings at once, so that time is counted once in the output. A two-second overlap shortens the combined length by two seconds. The duration display shows the resulting length.
What happens with zero overlap?
The recordings play consecutively with no shared interval. Increase the overlap when you want the end and beginning to play together through a fade. Listen before choosing a longer transition.
Does crossfade automatically match beats or keys?
You choose the order and overlap manually. Listen for rhythm and tonal clashes, particularly with two songs. The fade controls their levels during the transition; they do not rearrange the musical phrases.
How is crossfade different from fade in and fade out?
A crossfade joins two recordings through an overlap. Audio Fade changes the beginning or ending of one recording without joining it to another. Choose according to whether you are editing an edge or a handover.
