How to find the BPM by tapping
- Play the song and listen for a steady pulse.
- Tap once on each beat. Keep going for at least eight beats to smooth out small timing differences.
- Read the tempo, then reset before trying another section or song. After a pause of more than three seconds, your next tap starts a new measurement.
Follow the pulse, not every note
Tap Tempo measures the rhythm you tap. A song can feel like 70 BPM or 140 BPM depending on which beat you follow. If your result seems too slow or too fast, try tapping half as often or twice as often.
Questions about Tap Tempo
How many taps do I need?
Two taps give the first estimate. Eight or more steady taps usually give a more useful reading. The result follows your most recent beats so you can adjust as the music changes.
Can I use a phone or a keyboard?
Yes. Tap the large button on a touch screen, click it with a mouse, or press Space. When the tap button has keyboard focus, Enter works too. Holding a key counts as one tap.
Do I need to upload the song?
No. Play the song wherever you like and tap along. To measure an audio file automatically, use the BPM Finder.
