01 — The tool
Remove silence from audio while keeping natural pauses
The free Loudness.ai Silence Remover finds quiet passages and shortens those that meet your selected settings. Use it to reduce long waits in voice notes, narration or recorded lessons. The waveform marks detected gaps so you can review where the timing will change before exporting.
Three controls shape the result: silence threshold defines how quiet a passage must be, minimum pause defines which gaps qualify, and retained pause defines how much space stays. A three-second gap can become a short pause rather than disappearing entirely. For unwanted sound throughout a recording, use the Audio Enhancer to reduce background noise.

02 — How it works
How to remove long pauses from audio for free
Open and inspect the recording
Choose your audio and look at its quieter stretches. Listen to a few pauses so you can distinguish an empty wait from a soft word, breath or musical decay.
Adjust the silence settings
Set the threshold and minimum pause, then choose the retained pause. Keep a short gap between sentences rather than removing all breathing room. Review the marked regions and calculated new duration.
Preview and export
Prepare the shortened recording and listen across the edited gaps. If quiet words are cut, lower the threshold or make the minimum pause longer. Export MP3 or WAV once the pacing sounds right.
03 — Practical uses
Shorten pauses in voice notes, podcasts and lessons
Voice notes
Remove long waits before a speaker continues, while retaining enough space to follow the message. For a single unwanted opening or ending, the Audio Cutter provides a more direct manual edit.
Narration and podcast takes
Shorten pauses between paragraphs or takes to make the recording easier to review. Listen around breaths and quiet consonants, particularly when a speaker gets softer near the end of a sentence.
Recorded lessons
Reduce waits while a presenter changes slides or prepares an explanation. Keep longer pauses when listeners need time to answer a question. Split the finished lesson into chapters with the Audio Splitter.
04 — Frequently asked questions
Silence Remover questions
Does silence removal reduce background noise?
It changes the length of quiet gaps. It does not continuously remove hiss, hum or room noise from speech. A lower noise level can also help distinguish empty pauses from sound you want to keep.
What does the silence threshold mean?
It is the level below which sound counts as quiet for detection. A higher threshold can include softer speech or music. A lower threshold is more selective about what qualifies as silence.
Why should I keep a retained pause?
Some space between phrases helps speech remain understandable. The retained pause leaves part of a qualifying gap in place, so the edit reduces waiting time without forcing every sentence directly against the next.
Can it remove pauses from a song?
It can detect quiet musical passages, but those may be part of the arrangement. Review the marked regions and listen to the preview carefully. Use manual trimming for an intentional musical edit.
