How to use the Camelot wheel
- Find the key of your first track. If you do not know it, analyze the song with BPM Finder to get its key and Camelot code.
- Choose that code on the wheel or in the selector. A means minor; B means major.
- Try the same code, a neighboring number with the same letter, or the same number with the other letter. Preview the blend before adding it to your set.
The basic harmonic mixing rules
For a track in 8A (A minor), start with 8A, 7A, 9A or 8B. The neighboring numbers follow the circle of fifths. Switching between 8A and 8B connects A minor with its relative major, C major. At the ends of the chart, 12 and 1 are neighbors.

Questions about mixing in key
What do A and B mean?
A labels minor keys and B labels major keys. The letter is a mode label, not the note name: 8A is A minor, while 8B is C major.
Can I mix 12A with 1A?
Yes. The wheel wraps around, so 12A and 1A are neighbors. The same applies to 12B and 1B.
Why do some keys have two names?
Sharp and flat spellings can refer to the same pitch on an equal-tempered instrument. G-sharp minor and A-flat minor both map to 1A; F-sharp major and G-flat major both map to 2B.
Does matching keys guarantee a good mix?
Use compatible keys to narrow your choices, then listen. Overlapping vocals, clashing rhythms or an awkward phrase change can still interrupt a mix. Tracks outside these basic relationships can also work with the right transition.
Does changing BPM change the key?
Changing playback speed also changes pitch unless key lock or time stretching preserves it. Check the key at the speed you intend to play, and listen to the result.
